1000 Guineas (G1)
May 1, 2022
Confidence behind Tenebrisim will have been shaken a little with the failure of Flotus to justify favoritism in the first race at Newmarket who was a well beaten fourth today. She’d run second to Tenebrisim in the Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f last year where the Ballydoyle filly on only her second run was a surprise winner returned at 14/1. Her previous outing came six months before, on the first day of the Irish flat season, when she won her maiden over 5f.
She’s accompanied by stablemate Tuesday, also twice raced, she was a shorthead off Discoveries on debut in June last year over 7f. She returned to the racecourse in March to win at Naas over a mile in impressive style.
Discoveries from the Jessica Harrington yard, after winning her maiden, ran third to Agartha in the Debutante Stakes and turned that form around when taking the Moyglare Stakes over Champions Weekend.
The other Irish filly in the race Juncture from the Ger Lyons yard won her maiden on the second time of asking then ran second to Agartha in the Sliver Flash Stakes last July. A comeback run on the all weather at Dundalk in early March was the sharpener for this where she was an easy 6L winner.
Two travel from France, Malavath for Francis-Henri Graffard won the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly and ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar to Pizza Blanca. She prepped for this by taking the Prix Imprudence at Deauville from Andre Farbe Zellie the winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac last year.
With no Inspirial the home team is weak in the market. Led by Wild Beauty for Charlie Appleby, she was a G1 winner in Canada last year taking the Natalma Stakes beating subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner Pizza Blanca. She was then a well beaten fifth in the Fillies Mile, won by Inspiral, with Properous Voyage, Cachet and Mise En Scene all outgunning her also. She did take the Fred Darling on route to this.
Most likely this is for export.
Without Inspiral the French and Irish form looks a shade stronger than the English which would suggest this is for export. Ballydoyle hold a strong hand with both Tenebrisim and particulary Tuesday who was very impresive at Naas over a mile. However a surprise is still on the cards.
The Juddmonte filly, Juncture could overturn the better fancied fillies. She was put away after Siver Flash in July and her comeback run at Dundalk at Listed level had a air about it, she didn’t beat much but she looked really well in how she did it. Coming from off the pace she floated away from the field leaving just a sterring job for Colin Keane. On that basis a chance is taken with her.
