1000 Guineas (Group 1)

There will be a lot of confidence behind Desert Flower after Godolphin took the 2000 Guineas yesterday. She was unbeaten in four runs last year finishing off her year taking the Fillies’ Mile here at Newmarket where she annihilated the opposition winning going away by 5½L.

Lake Victoria is also unbeaten and boasts an even more impressive juvenile record. She had five runs last year. In her last three she reeled off three Group 1’s taking the Moyglare Stakes at the Curragh over 7f, the Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f here at Newmarket and finishing off at Del Mar over a mile when she won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Ger Lyons sends Red Letter with Colin Keane in the plate. She was only beaten a head by Lake Victoria on debut, then won her maiden impressively before going down 1½L in the Moyglare Stakes when stepped into Group 1 company.

Simmering finished second under Dylan Browne McGonagle and the partnership is renewed. She went to France for the Prix Marcel Boussac running fourth, beaten 3½L, and on reappearance, this year went off joint favourite in the Fred Darling but didn’t fire, being well beaten. The Ollie Sangster team felt that the ground was too quick for her, conditions she’ll face again today. Their other runner, Flight has 2¼L to find with the favourite based on her run in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last year.

The Fred Daring was won in good style by Archie Watson’s Duty First under Hollie Doyle, once again in the plate today. Jack Channon’s Hey Boo ran on well to take second.

Ralph Beckett sends the once-raced Chantilly Lace, who was an easy winner of a Novice Stakes at Salisbury over 7f on heavy ground. Saeed Bin Suroor’s Elwateen has a similar profile. Once raced, she took a Novice Stakes on the all-weather at Kempton last August.

Andrew Balding’s Rematt makes up the field, a Maiden winner last June, she ran third in the Nell Gwyn Stakes going down 2¼L to Zanzoun.

Godolphin had an extraordinary weekend. In addition to winning the 2000 Guineas yesterday, they also won the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby across the pond. William Buick will look to complete an amazing four-timer of classics for the team.

Can anyone put a hole in the weekend?

Ryan Moore will feel he can, so too will Colin Keane. A chance is taken with Red Letter.
