Falmouth Stakes (G1)

A competitive affair for the meeting of the generations, the older mares will have to give weight to the three-year-olds.

Lady Bowthorpe brings the best form of the older brigade, she’s five now, she’s stepped up considerably on what’s she done previously, a G3 winner last year, this year she’s won the G2 Dahila Stakes at Newmarket first time out from fellow five-year-old’s Queen Power with Lavender’s Blue back in third. She then ran second to Palace Pier in the G1 Lockinge. Indie Angel did beat her in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes with a seven-pound pull, Queen Power ran third, Champers Elysees fourth, Lavender’s Blue fifth.

Is the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes form better than that shown by the classic generation?

Alcohol Free heads the three-year-olds. She won the Cheveley Park Stakes here last year and in her most recent outing in the Coronation Stakes, run on heavy ground at Royal Ascot, she beat Snow Lantern and the 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth with a tiring Pretty Gorgeous back in fifth.

Saffron Beach comes back to a mile having failed to stay in the Oaks, she was second to Mother Earth in the Guineas. Prima Bacio, a York Listed winner needs to step up, she wasn’t far off Alcohol Free when they met at Newbury in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes in the spring. The unbeaten Just Beautiful was also a Listed winner at Musselburgh last time out.

In the round, with the weight for age allowance, the form of the classic generation looks to give them an advantage.

Pretty Gorgeous was a good juvenile, second to Shale in the Moyglare, she then took the Fillies’ Mile here from Indigo Girl and Mother Earth. In her two runs this year she’s improved from one to the other, while she still has something to find to beat these, she looks like a filly who will improve through the season and today she provides the each-way play.

Recommendation

Pretty Gorgeous 16/1 e/w
