July Cup (G1)

You have to go back to 2009 to find the last filly to win the July Cup.

Fleeting Spirit managed to beat the colts as a four-year-old.

Ken Condon tries to do it a year earlier with the three-year-old, Miss Amulet.

Bought by Michael Tabor’s wife Doreen after winning the Lowther Stakes impressively at York last summer, in Doreen’s colours, she was beaten a ½L by Alcohol Free in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

She went to Keenland for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf over a mile running third to Aunt Pearl, Mother Earth was a neck in front of her.

Sky Lantern beat Mother Earth and Alcohol Free in the Falmouth today.

Once raced this year in the Irish 1000 Guineas she got stuck in the mud and dropped out to second last.

Ken Condon now reverts to sprinting with her.

She’d shown a good turn of foot before the Lowther winning a Cork Maiden over 5F by 5L. Next time out at Down Royal she was beaten 1¾L over the same trip by Measure Of Magic.

She then turned that around at Listed Level n the Marwell Stakes at Naas beating a good sprinter, Frenetic with Measure Of Magic 2L back in third.

Measure Of Magic ran third in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot to Campanelle, Campanelle was awarded the race in the steward’s room from Dragon Symbol, the 5/1 third favourite here, who was adjudged to have come off a true line in the run to the wire.

As the only three-year-old filly in the race, she gets weight from the rest of the field, 3 lbs from the three-year-old colts and up to 9 lbs from the older ones.

Given her form at sprint distances last year, allied to the weight advantage, the form of the Commonwealth Cup and today’s Falmouth Stakes she looks a big price at 50/1 for this tomorrow, most bookmakers, online, paying the first five.

Recommendation

Miss Amulet 50/1 ew
