Update On Pattern Race World Championships 2019 – September

Sir Tony McCoy

We are nearly two-third’s of the way through the G1 season across the world with 199 of the scheduled 318 G1 races run to date.

Last weekend, in Europe, Doncaster featured the last Classic of the season in England, the St Leger, in Ireland Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown and the Curragh, hosted six of Ireland’s thirteen Group 1’s, we were also treated to Sir Tony McCoy returning to the winners enclosure after victory in the Cancer Trials Champions Race, and at Lonchamp Arc Trials Weekend featured the G1 Prix Vermeille.

Across the pond in Canada, Woodbine hosted it’s big weekend running four of their seven G1’s, the feature being the Woodbine Mile, won by El Tormenta at 45/1, while in Australia, the Makybe Diva Stakes took place where 100/1 shot Gatting took the prize, shocks happen even at G1 level.

The Sire Championship 2019

The biggest impact came from Galileo, already top of the table, he’d even by his standards, a remarkable weekend.

It started on Saturday with Nayef Road’s third in the Leger, followed by Hermosa’s second in the Matron Stakes, then a clean sweep in the Irish Champion Stakes with Magical, Magic Wand and Antony Van Dyck filling the 1,2,3.

On Sunday the feat was matched in the Irish St Leger with his daughter Search For A Song beating his son’s Kew Gardens and Southern France. Throw in Love’s win in the Moyglare and Armory’s second in the National and it all added up to a magnificent 73 point haul to move him to 285 points for the season so far, 166 clear of Dubawi on 119, his nearest rival.

The Trainers Championship 2019

No surprise that the trainer most associated with the rock that is Galileo had a good weekend also.

Aidan O’Brien harvested 90 points, as well as collecting 59 points courtesy of Galileo prodigy he trained, he also added a further 31 points via a 1, 2 in the Flying Five where a head separated Scat Daddy’s offspring Fairyland and So Perfect. Add in Arizona’s (No Nay Never) second in the National Stakes and So Wonderful’s (War Front) third in the Moyglare and it all added up to a great weekend for team Ballydoyle.

The Jockey Championship 2019

Ryan Moore has knocked Frankie Dettori off the top perch.

Frankie won the St Leger on Saturday on Logician and the Vermeille on Sunday on Star Catcher, both for John Gosden, however, Ryan outpointed him riding a G1 treble, on Magical, Love and Fairyland and added two second’s on Armory and Hermosa.

The Horse Championship 2019

Changes also occurred in the Horse Championship, Bricks And Mortar was overhauled by Magical who went a point ahead on 41 points on the back of the win in The Irish Champion Stakes. Milote and Osborne Bulls are jointly in third.

The Owners Championship 2019

Coolmore added 90 points bringing their total to 360, closing the gap on big rivals Godolphin to 13.5 points, just short of the boys in blue 373.5 total, it’s a tight race now between the world’s powerhouses.

Whist Coolmore’s will be delighted with the weekend’s activity it will be Godolphin who’ll be most excited, Pintabuo’s demolition of the National Stakes field, a 9L winning margin puts him in a class comparable to only the very best juvenile’s performances, memories of Arazi’s Breeders Cup Juvenile in 1991 and Celtic Swing’s Racing Post Trophy in 1994 were evoked and legitimate comparisions are being made to the benchmark, Frankel, he could be even better.

Old Persian’s win in the Northern Dancer at Woodbine is also worthy of mention.

In the Breeders Championship Godolphin surpassed Darley, as well as Pinatbu and Old Persian, they also bred Music Amica, second in the Vermeille and Fair Maiden, third in the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine.
