Coronation Stakes (G1)

Inspiral leads the market for this. She hasn’t been this year, her trainers, John and Thady Gosden deciding the Guineas had come too soon. She was unbeaten as a juvenile twice beating Prosperous Voyage in the May Hill and Fillies Mile where Cachet ran third.

Cachet has shown the value of the form by winning the 1000 Guineas this year with Prosperous Voyage running second. Cachet has since run second in France in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliche.

The filly who beat her there was Mangoustine who’d been unbeaten in three juvenile runs, her only blip so far coming when third in the Prix de la Grotte, a trial for the Pouliche.

The pot is stirred with a pair of American fillies here to make a challenge. Spendarella made her racecourse appearance a winning one in February winning a maiden for trainer, Englishman Graham Motion at Gulfstream Park. She’s since followed up by winning the G3 Herecomesthebride at the same venue and then the G2 Appalachian Stakes at Keenland.

Pizza Bianca was beaten by Wild Beauty in the Natalma Stakes in Canada last year before taking the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. She was beaten in a three-runner event at home, the winner since taking a G2 while she herself won at Listed level last time out.

Tenebrism went off favourite for the Guineas on the back of two juvenile wins, the first a Naas Maiden on the first day of the season and then when dropped into G1 company six months later she hacked up in the Cheveley Park with Sandrine back in third. She disappointed at Newmarket finishing eighth with Sandrine in front of her in fifth.

Discoveries was a place in front of her at Newmarket. She’d won her maiden at the Curragh last June beating subsequent Oaks winner Tuesday and followed up later in the season taking the Moyglare Stakes reversing form with Argartha who’d held her in third in between in the Debutante Stakes.

Discoveries leaving the pre parade ring at the Curragh last year

Grand Dame maybe an outsider but coming from John and Thady Gosden’s yard she needs to be respected. Only two runs the first a winning one, the second a runner-up slot at York.

Likewise, respect should be given to Henry De Bromhead’s filly Honey Girl however her form, second to Fiach McHugh, beaten today, and third to History, she ran fifth in the Irish 1000 Guineas leaves her short at this level.

Inspiral is the one to beat on her two-year-old form. It has been franked by Cachet and Prosperous Voyage in the Guineas. Her trainers will not have her short on her seasonal debut however the setback that kept her out of Newmarket leaves a question to be answered.

French Guineas form may be slightly ahead of English form and with the presence of the two American Fillies, we have an intriguing contest. In an open one, the choice is Discoveries. Jessica’s weren’t firing early but with a win under the belt today in the Ribblesdale the string is now in good shape. It’s the win over Tuesday and the Moyglare that shade it.

Recommendation

Discoveries 8/1 win
