The Sussex Stakes (G1)
July 29, 2020

A cracking renewal of the Sussex Stakes.
Colin Keane and Ger Lyons make the trip across the water to Goodwood today to accompany their star turn on his biggest assignment to date.
The Irish Guineas winner, a race he won in emphatic style takes on three other three-year-olds, the English Guineas winner Kameko and runner up Witcha and Vatican City, the runner up behind Siskin at the Curragh.
Three four-year-olds set the standard for the younger brigade, Circus Maximus, a triple G1 winner including last time out in the Queen Anne, he also won the Prix du Moulin and St James Palace Stakes last year.
Mohaather down the pack in the Queen Anne, he broke slowly never seeing daylight, he was stuck behind a wall of horses and Jim Crowley never had anywhere to go, he then showed his class when dropped to G2 company in the Summer Mile where he powered away from San Donato, another of the older brigade, to win in some style.
Kameko was a really good winner of the Guineas at Newmarket putting the race to bed in the final furlong, then a trip over the mile and a half for the Derby stretched his stamina beyond his capabilities. The step back is ideal.
There’ll be some trepidation in the Glenburnie camp as Siskin goes to post, memories of the Middle Park at Newmarket last year when he was spooked in the gate leading to him turning over and being withdrawn, will mean nails are suddenly shorter. The one who won’t be bothered will be the pilot, Colin knows it was an aberration, we won’t see it again.
A class race will see a class outcome, Siskin to remain unbeaten.
Recommendation: Siskin 5/2 win
