The Irish Derby
June 26, 2011
Mystified. Since the Derby all the comment has been about how Carlton House should have won the Derby or at least should have been pipped by Pour Mio. No credit is given to Treasure Beach, it’s like he never existed in the race at all.
That will change today. He is the form horse. Nathaniel’s performance at Ascot solidifies this. Treasure Beach beat him on in the Chester Vase and today Colm Donoghue’s mount will again display his class and again he will get the better of the Queen’s horse.
In the Derby Carlton House was getting to Treasure Beach but in the last 100 yards it was the Irish horse who was pulling out more. He was always holding Micheal Stoute’s colt and only lost the Derby to a horse with an incredible turn of foot. As pointed out here in the Derby post, turn of foot, as displayed in Listowel last year is why Treasure Beach did so well in the Derby.
The race has already stood up well with Pisco Sour’s victory also at Ascot and by seasons end we will look back at the Derby seeing it as one of top quality.
Today that will be further cemented with a winning performance from Treasure Beach with Carlton House chasing him home again. They are both good horses, it’s just Aidan O’Brien’ is better. Maybe after today the press will acknowledge that.
