Past the halfway point of the G1 season across the world, so far 168 of the scheduled 318 G1 races have been run.
Last week G1 action was at Deauville in Europe and Saratoga and Del Mar in America.
This week York takes centre stage with the Juddmonte International the feature on Wednesday, The Yorkshire Oaks on Thursday and the Nunthorpe on Friday.
On Saturday The Winx Stakes takes place at Randwick, the first Group 1 of the season in Australia while at Saratoga, Travers day will feature six Grade 1’s with the Travers Stakes the feature.
Frankie Dettori consolidated his position at the top with a win in the Prix Jean Romanet on Coronet and a second on Raffle Prize in the Prix Morny. He’s scored 175 points so far this year, only six was short of his 181 points total of last year.
Second place Ryan Moore failed to score last week and remains on 131 points. Javier Castellano jumps to third on 106 points after a runners up place in the Alabama Stakes on Point Of Honour, a big congratulations to Sophie Doyle on her third place in the same race aboard Street Band, scoring her first points in these championships, last year’s winner Roel Rosario remains in fourth on 102 points.
A dry week for Aidan O’Brien, no points added he remains top.
His nearest pursuer Chad Brown has made some serious inroads into his lead in the last couple of weeks, wins in all three of the Grade 1’s on the Arlington card, Arlington Million (Bricks and Mortar), Secretariat Stakes (Valid Point) and Beverley D. Stakes (Sistercharlie) was followed by further success at Saratoga in the Alabama Stakes (Dunbar Road) and Del Mar Oaks (Cambier Parc), that’s five Grade 1 win’s in the last couple of weeks.
It was great to see Ger Lyon’s and Colin Keane both achieve their first G1 win’s in Ireland with Siskin in the Pheonix Stakes. Point’s on these tables are hard-earned.
Godolphin move onto 328.5 points, two third’s in the Grosser Preis Van Berlin (Old Persian) and Prix Jacques Le Marois (Space Blues) were followed by a win in the Prix Morny (Earthlight).
Coolmore are in second and improved their points total with a pair of second’s in the Secretariat Stakes (Van Beethoven) and Arlington Million (Magic Wand).
In the Breeders Championship Darley remain out front on 171 points, Godolphin move into second on 163.50 points after getting the forecast up in the Prox Morny being breeders of Earthlight and Raffle Prize.

The Juddmonte International (G1) and Yorkshire Oaks (G1)
Crystal Ocean is a warm order favourite for the International with Enable going the Yorkshire Oaks route on her way to defending her Arc crown.
Crystal Ocean won the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot getting the better of Magical before finding Enable too good in the King George, she’d also got the better of Magical in the Coral-Eclipse on her seasonal debut.
The King George was an attritional race, Enable drawn wide had a horrid passage, her class saw her get to Crystal Ocean between the three and two-furlong pole, he’d benefited from the better draw. A great battle commenced up the home straight, Crystal Ocean dug deep on the inside but it was the fillies turn of foot that proved the decisive factor, she won by a neck. It was 1975 all over again, Grundy and Bustino.
In the Coral-Eclipse Enable was always in front of Magical and took command two out. Magical battled but hard as she tried she was never getting there.
John Gosden who also runs the high-class Lah Ti Dah in the Yorkshire Oaks, beaten a ¼l by Coronet, won the Prix Jean Romanet on Sunday, in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, has chosen the longer trip for Enable, the decision serves two purposes, keeping her against her own sex and running her over her best distance, the concern is the hard race that was the King George.
That’s something Aidan O’Brien will hope to capitalise on in both races. Japan and Magical both have had longer breaks then Crystal Ocean and Enable.
Japan who’d hinted at his quality in the Beresford Stakes last year was an impressive winner of the King Edward VII Stakes in June, adding the Grand Prix De Paris in July, incidentally, Aidan O’Brien’s last G1 winner, both races restricted to 3yo’s, he now meets older brethren for the first time. The form of both races suggests Japan must step up considerably on what he’s achieved to date, beat Bangkok 4½l at Ascot (Bangkok was then 9l behind by Elarqam in the York Stakes) and in Paris while he had a cosy ½l win over Slalom, he’d been beaten 23l in the French Derby.
Elarqam’s victory in the York Stakes was very likeable, he stretched away easily dominating those in behind who included Regal Reality and it was a powerful performance, albeit against lesser opposition than he faces here.
Aidan O’Brien also runs Circus Maximus whose shown his versatility, stepping back in trip from a 1m4f in the Epsom Derby, he won the St James’s Palace Stakes over 1m beating King Of Comedy a neck with Too Darn Hot ¾l back in third. Last time out, Too Darn Hot turned the tables on Circus Maximus in the Sussex Stakes beating him ½l with Lord Glitters a further 2½l back in fifth.
While it would be great for international racing if Japan, the country this time, could win another G1 on English soil this year, their representative Cheval Grand, the 2017 Japan Cup winner, could well improve on the sixth place achieved in the King George.
The heart says Crystal Ocean and Enable, so does the head, but it’s that hard race in the King George.
Grundy after his King George came to the International and finished a tired fourth, Crystal Ocean may find it similarly difficult to overcome those exertions, unlike Grundy who was a 3yo, Crystal Ocean has to give weight away, the 3yo Circus Maximus can capitalise.
Enable’s easier assignment, and sheer class, should see her confirm form with Magical.
