Darley Irish Oaks (Group 1)(Fillies)

Is this a Wonder Of Wonders?

Is there a filly capable of overturning the hot-pot for this Irish Oaks? Aidan’s filly is even money for the contest onthe back of her performance in The Oaks at Epsom and her price reflects the expectation that she will turn the tables with the winner Dancing Rain. The layers are of the view that Johnny Murtagh stole the crown with a very clever tactical ride and his cleverness won’t be repeated over the stiffer Curragh track. They may well be right in that assessment with Ryan Moore replacing Kieren Fallon in the plate and two pacemakers to boot. Johnny won’t get to dictate matters and a more forceful ride on the favourite will be guaranteed. You do wonder if the best filly actually won at Epsom?

Frankie Dettori will be looking to redeem himself on Blue Bunting. If Johnny’s ride at Epsom was masterful, well Frankie’s was on the other end of the scale. It doesn’t diminish the ability of the filly. She displayed a very nice turn of foot to get up in the 1000 Guineas to collar Yesterday. Epsom was difficult experience for her, indecisiveness, slow pace and camber didn’t suit her and this test will be more to her liking. You wonder if Frankie will get it right this time?

Banimpire runs for the eighth time this season. She must feel she’s been on holidays with her longest break of the season since her Royal Ascot success in the Ribblesdale. You wonder if Jim Bolger’s great ability for improving fillies will continue to keep this one getting better?

Rumh is the supporting cast for Godolphin and the interesting booking of Pat Smullen catches the eye. She won a listed contest by 6 L at Newbury before failing behind Banimpire in the Ribblesdale and you wonder why the jockey booking?

Jessica Harrington ran Siren Song at Epsom and is represented here by Laughing Lashes. She ran at Newmarket in the 1000 Guineas and after racing prominently fell away. It was a disappointing run but amends were made with a fine third in the Curragh equivalent going down 1 3/4 L to Misty For Me. That form looks good now with Misty For Me’s 6 L defeat of Midday in the Pretty Polly. Her form as a two year old was also closely tied to the Ballydoyle filly. She had the upper hand in the Debutante Stakes but in the Moyglare the form was turned around. The Curragh ground will be on the softer side of good come post time and this will suit Jessica Harrington’s filly as will the step up in trip. You wonder if Aidan had chosen to run Misty For Me here?

No need to wonder any more. The wonder of wonders could be the layers generosity with Laughing Lashes.
