Golden Jubilee Stakes

The return on Johnny Murtagh to the big stage in the famous blue silks on Bewitched will be the focus of attention today on the last day of the meeting. Since the split last year the only time he has worn the Magnier’s colours was when he won on this filly at Leopardstown in the Ballychourus Stakes. The race confirmed what she had shown in the second half of her three-year old career, she’s a filly on the up. A listed win in July was followed by a third with her first step into pattern company. The promise she showed was then delivered on taking the Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh and then the Bengough Stakes at Ascot. Three Group 3’s in a row encouraged Charles O’Brien to go for the jugular and step her up to Group 1. Her versatility on ground is a major plus as her wins last year were on easy surfaces while in the Ballychourus it was good to firm where she easily accounted for Zoffany . The form took a major boost with his good performance behind Frankel on Tuesday.

Like Bewitched, Delegator is by Dansili . On the face of it you would see his race record as disappointing having promised so much. He started Guineas favourite only to be beaten by Sea The Stars and the St James Palace Stakes saw him a neck behind Mastercraftsman. He’s never really hit those heights again and Godolphin have finally decided to turn him into a sprinter. His natural talent always suggested that this would be his forte but it remains to be seen if his class is intact for a career in top-level sprinting.

You would imagine the ground will be gone for Star Witness and the second to Prohibit in the King Stand will be as good as it gets for the Australian. That may also be the case for Hooray who didn’t stay in Guineas while Bathed Breath also displayed his recent good form on fast ground.

Those with form on soft include Definightly, Dalghar, Royal Rock and Amico Fritz. The latter ran in this last year and acquitted himself well in fifth on ground that didn’t suit.

This year the rain has come for him but expect the Irish filly to out score him and when you place your bet don’t forget to wiggle your nose.
