We are approaching the halfway point of the G1 season across the world, so far 156 of the scheduled 318 G1 races have been run.
Last week G1 action was at Goodwood, Deauville and Dusseldorf in Europe and Saratoga in America.
This week meetings continue at Saratoga and Deauville with the Curragh and Hoppegarten also staging G1’s and in addition, also in America Arlington Park hosts it’s annual extravaganza, the Arlington Millon meeting.
He goes top of the jockey’s standings on 158 points, last year he came seventh with a total of 181 points, fair to say his season is going well.
It was Enable’s victory in King George that saw him surpass Ryan Moore as leading jockey worldwide.
Since, wins from Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup, Too Darn Hot in the Sussex Stakes (now retired due to injury), Mehdaayih’s second in the Nassau Stakes followed by Advertise’s win the Prix Maurice de Gheest have cemented his lead. It’s a considerable achievement, he’s already ridden his twelfth G1’s winner this year, in the whole of last year he rode eight.
No doubt Ryan Moore will continue to chase him and with Hugh Bowman sitting third (he’ll be looking forward to a rewarding spring) and last year’s winner Roel Rosario, now in fourth, (he’ll try to extend Uni’s winning sequence to five in the Fourstar Dave at Saratoga on Saturday), all three will be gunning him down as we enter the second half of the season.
Advantage Frankie, a hard man to peg back given a lead however he’s no G1 rides this weekend.
Osbourne Bulls is best on 35 points followed by Too Darn Hot on 32 points who alas won’t get to add to his tally while four horses, Winx, Blue Point (both also retired) Beauty Generation and Bricks And Mortor sit in joint third on 30 points.
Bricks And Mortor will go off a short price favourite for the Arlington Millon and a win will secure top spot here.
Bricks and Mortar leaving the ring at Belmont before winning the Manhattan Stakes in June
If one needed a reminder of the ever-expanding nature of top-class international racing then just look at what was wonderfully exhibited last week by Deirdre, the Japanese winner of the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. Long may it continue.
No winners at either Goodwood or Deauville for Aidan O’Brien, he did add points to stretch his lead with placed efforts from I Can Fly and Circus Maximus to reach 219 points. As well as contesting the Pheonix Stakes at the Curragh, more of that later, he sends five to Chicago this weekend, two entered in the Beverley D (Fleeting and Magic Wand), two in the Secretariat (Van Beethoven and Never No More) and two in the Arlington Million (Hunting Horn and Magic Wand).
Australians, James Cummings and Chris Waller occupy second and third respectively and spring is coming.
Godolphin remain with top on 308.5 points after a week which saw two placed efforts, from Cross Counter in the Goodwood Cup and Space Blues in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. They’ll rely on Old Persian, their sole representative at G1 level this weekend at Hoppegarten in the Grosser Preis von Berlin.
Coolmore are in second on 212 points with Japan’s Sunday Racing in third on 59 points.
In the Breeders Championship Darley stay in pole with 171 points with Northern Farm, breeders of Deirdre in second on 138 points, Godolphin occupy third on 134.50 points.

This week will be intriguing, the first G1 of the season in Europe for two-year-old’s takes place at the Curragh, the Pheonix Stakes where five line out and after 15mls of rain overnight the track will be yielding with more rain forecast.
Siskin from the Ger Lyons yard will head the market and in three run’s to date he’s looked a colt with a lot of promise.
He readily accounted for his main market rival, Aidan O’Brien’s son of American Pharoah, Monarch Of Eygpt in the G2 Railway Stakes last time out, Ballydoyle are also represented by Royal Lytham, a winner of the G2 Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket, and Mount Fuji, a Cork maiden winner.
Siskin has yet to encounter anything other than good ground however it will be a surprise if he doesn’t win and go on from this to even better things, the 14/1 on offer for next years 2000 Guineas should also be taken.
A fascinating renewal of the Million, Bricks And Mortar takes on stable companion Robert Bruce once again. The former was a clear winner from the latter in the Manhattan at Belmont, 4L back in sixth was the ex Dermot Weld trained Bandua, since won the Arlington Handicap, a key trial for this race won by The Pizza Man who won this in 2015.
The O’Brien pair Magic Wand (may run in the Beverley D) and Hunting Horn will make a test of it, Bricks and Mortar beat Magic Wand 2ยฝL in the Pegasus Turf in January, she was desperately disappointing when well beaten behind Enable in the King George where Hunting Horn ran creditably in fifth.
Intellogent, the French challenger, won last years Jean Prat, hasn’t run since the Prix d’Ispahan in May and Pivione, the John Smiths Cup winner travels from England.
They’ve all got it to now to stop Bricks And Mortar, she’s a solid favourite.
