Joseph O’Brien runs a trio.
Thundering On, the mount of Dylan Browne McGonagle, heads a field of eleven going to post for the Irish Oaks.
She won the Oaks at Epsom in very good style, having shown her quality when winning previously at Navan. She went for the Pretty Poly over 1m2f, and the turn of foot seen at Epsom wasn’t there. She could only finish fourth.
Colin Keane will partner Johanna Walsh. She was an easy Maiden winner, upping her game to just fail in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Accompaning them both from Owning Hill is the unbeaten Rebel Moon, A Gowran Maiden winner, she followed up in the G3 Jannah Rose Stakes at Naas.
Aidan O’Brien has a quintet.
Amerila Earhart, the mount of Ryan Moore, went off favourite for the Oaks after an easy win in the Cheshire Oaks; however, at Epsom, she finished a well-beaten sixth.
Sugar Island, the mount of Wayne Lordan, also contested at Epsom, finishing third. She hasn’t run since.
Cameo was another Epsom runner; she finished fifth. Chris Hayes will be on board for this assignment. Since Epsom, she was a well-beaten third in the Jannah Rose.
Beautify will have Ronan Whelan in the plate, sixth in the Irish 1000 Guineas; she filled the same spot in the Pretty Poly.
Composing is the mount of Gavin Ryan; she was slightly unlucky to finish 5ΒΌL fifth, behind Earth Shot in the Ribblesdale, she was hampered by a loose horse rounding the bend.
Jim Bolger has supplemented Sparan Nua. She’s unbeaten in three. Last time out, she took the Munster Oaks in good style. Declan McDonagh will ride.
Two English Runners
Willie Haggas sends Earth Shot under James Doyle. She won a Newmarket Maiden was a head second in the Height Of Fashion Stakes, and then had a head to spare winning the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
David Menuisier’s Inis Mor will have Oisin Murphy on top. She beat Earth Shot at Goodwood and then finished third to Diamond Necklace in the Prix de Diane.
Conclusion
Johanna Walsh was gutsy at Royal Ascot; she got lonely out in front and was just collared by Earth Shot’s sustained run. There wasn’t a lot between the English fillies at Goodwood before that.
Ameila Earhart will be a lot more competitive than she was at Epsom. Stablemates Beautify, Composing, Cameo, and Sugar Island will ensure there is a strong pace. Composing could fare best of them and run into a place.
Inis Mor ran a cracker at Chantilly and will enjoy this extra distance. The form could be better than both Epsom and Ascot.
Rebel Moon is the least experienced in the field, having had just the two runs; she looked like she’d relish the step up in trip when winning at Naas.
Sparan Nua is shaping into a tough one and can run well.
Thundering On looked a cut above the rest at Epsom. Legacy Link, who ran second to her, failed to justify favouritism in the Ribblesdale, fought out by Earth Shot and Johanna Walsh. Inis Mor’s Chantilly run comes into this; however, the turn of foot shown by Thundering On at Epsom was better than that of Earth Shot’s at Ascot, and Inis Mor’s kick in Paris.
While you have to forgive the Pretty Poly run, with these extra two furlongs to her benefit, Thundering On can do just that.
Recommendation
Thundering On 5/2 win
Composing 66/1 ew
