Saffron Beach has been a model of consistency this summer.
She showed her mettle last year when taking this beating Mother Earth. Since she’s traveled to Dubai for the Turf where she may not have stayed the nine furlongs finishing fourth. Back to a mile in her last three outings, she was a winner of the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at G2 level at Royal Ascot, then won the G1 Prix Rothschild in France and ran second in the G1 Matron Stakes in Ireland, beaten 3L by Pearls Galore.
She renews rivalry with Homeless Songs who was 2½L in arrears of her at Leopardstown.
The Dermot Weld filly had put in a super performance in the Irish 1000 Guineas when winning pulling away, showing a clean pair of heels to run out an easy 5½L from Tuesday, the subsequent Oaks winner.
She was kept for an autumn campaign, her preference being with a cut in the ground. Her return at Leopardstown was a little disappointing, well backed, she failed to settle in the hands of Chris Hayes and had emptied before running on at the same pace in the final furlong. The burst of acceleration seen at the Curragh was not there in Dublin.
Laurel goes for John and Thady Gosden, the Juddmonte filly has little experience, a 3yo who only made her debut in July, she’s a winner of two novices and has been supplemented for this. By Kingman, she’s bred in the purple and must be very highly thought of to be thrown in at the deep end by such an experienced team. They also run Grande Dame who ran second at G3 level last time out.
Prosperous Voyage has the scalp of Inspiral. She beat her in the Falmouth but the form was well and truly reversed in the Jacques le Marois where she was beaten 6¾L.
The money has come for Homeless Songs, available at 5/1 earlier in the week she has been backed into 9/4 and will vie for favourtisim come the off. She may well have needed the run last time out after a long break and if she settles better than she did at Leopardstown that turn of foot may well return.
Recommendation
Homeless Songs 9/4 win
