Alpine Star after winning the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh last year

Jessica Harrington’s Alpine Star won the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh last year beating a good field including yesterday’s Epsom Oaks heroine Love.

She missed the Guineas both in England and Ireland instead making her comeback in the Coronation Stakes. She was an easy and impressive winner from the American filly Sharing, the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf winner and Quadilateeral the Guineas third.

The step-up in trip to 10f won’t present a problem and she’s a solid choice in a race with a strong Irish challenge with Peaceful and Fancy Blue also in the line-up, the one-two from the Irish 1000 Guineas.

In the Prix du Jockey Club the Irish challenge relies on two from Ballydoyle Fort Myers who’ll be ridden by Emmet McNamara who won at Epsom yesterday and Order Of Australia who’ll be ridden by Seamie Heffernan. The latter was fourth in the Irish Derby last weekend having previously finished in front of the Epsom Derby third Amhran Na Bhfiann, you might be put off by just a week’s recovery but that didn’t stop Serpentine winning at Epsom yesterday.

Magic Wand before the Irish Champion Stakes last year

At Sandown in the Coral-Eclipse we’ll all want to see Enable but there is a case for a place for Magic Wand to be made, she’s given the job of pacemaker for Japan and she’ll be asked to set sharp fractions, she’ll do the job perfectly, she might even hang on a place, she was mighty over a mile at the Curragh recently, pity there is only seven runners.
